Experience an alpine landing in the Mount Aspiring National Park, land on a wild West Coast beach and a landing at the Milford Sound aerodrome.
The flight departs from Wānaka Airport, flying over the mighty Clutha River and Lake Wānaka. Whilst en-route to Mount Aspiring, you will fly over some of Lake Wānaka's little Islands including Mou Waho Island, which is a unique glacial remnant of the last ice age and is now a nature reserve in the middle of the lake. You will then make a 6,000ft alpine landing which provides you with some spectacular photo opportunities with exceptional views of the surrounding Alps and Mount Aspiring itself. Following your landing, you will fly further into the Southern Alps and around the back of Mount Aspiring to see some truly extravagant glaciers, crevasses, shear ice faces and bright blue compacted ice, frozen waterfalls with views as far as the Tasman Sea on the West Coast.
Your flight then takes you over the Red Hills, over popular Lord of the Rings filming locations and above alpine lakes before our next landing on the wild West Coast - in complete contrast to your first landing. We will then continue onto spectacular Milford Sound flying up the sound from the beach. Landing for a short bush walk and coffee.
On departing Milford Sound your next leg in the journey takes us to the Sutherland Falls, the 5th highest waterfall in the world which tumbles 1,904ft from Lake Quill into Milford Sound. After many photo opportunities from above we then carry on to Glenorchy, over the Shotover River, Lake Wakatipu and the Queenstown Lakes area. Heading over Cardrona ski-field, past the Pisa Range before your return to Wānaka Airport.
